저는 철과 유리, 자개, 실, 빛 등 서로 다른 성질을 지닌 재료를 통해 인간의 내면과 관계를 탐구합니다. 특히 차갑고 단단한 철에 빛과 유리, 자개처럼 섬세한 재료를 더해 따뜻함과 감정의 결을 담아내는 데 관심을 두고 있습니다. 단단함과 연약함, 무게와 가벼움, 인공과 자연처럼 서로 다른 성질이 한 공간 안에서 만나 만들어내는 긴장과 균형은 제 작업을 이루는 중요한 출발점입니다.
제가 작업하는 문래동의 철공소 골목은 단순한 작업의 배경이 아닙니다. 절단과 용접의 소리, 철가루와 녹의 흔적, 오랜 시간 쌓여온 기술과 노동의 시간이 공존하는 이곳에서 저는 매일 철과 마주합니다. 철을 자르고, 가열하고, 이어 붙이며 선과 면의 균형을 찾아가는 과정은 언제나 계획한 대로 흘러가지는 않습니다. 때로는 재료가 제 의도를 거스르기도 하고, 예상하지 못했던 흔적이 새로운 방향을 만들어내기도 합니다.
저는 이러한 물질의 저항과 우연을 작업의 일부로 받아들입니다. 뜻대로 되지 않는 재료를 다시 바라보고 조율하는 과정은 삶을 대하는 저의 태도와도 닮아 있습니다. 상처나 흔들림을 감추기보다 그대로 바라보고, 그것을 새로운 형태로 전환하는 과정에서 저는 위로와 회복의 가능성을 발견합니다. 차갑고 단단한 철 안에 따뜻함을 담고자 하는 이유도 여기에 있습니다.
제 작업에서 철은 강인함과 긴장을 보여주지만, 동시에 열과 힘에 의해 휘어지고 변형될 수 있는 재료이기도 합니다. 유리와 자개는 빛에 따라 표정이 달라지고, 실과 조명은 재료와 재료 사이의 관계를 이어줍니다. 저는 서로 다른 재료가 각자의 성질을 잃지 않은 채 만나고, 때로는 부딪히고 기대며 하나의 균형을 만들어가는 순간에 주목합니다.
문래동 소공인들과의 협업 역시 제 작업에서 중요한 과정입니다. 오랜 시간 몸으로 익혀온 그들의 기술과 경험은 단순히 작품을 제작하기 위한 수단에 머무르지 않습니다. 용접 자국과 절단면, 금속의 미세한 변형처럼 손의 흔적이 작품에 남고, 저의 생각 역시 그들과의 대화와 제작 과정을 통해 달라지고 확장됩니다. 그렇게 작품에는 한 사람의 의도만이 아니라 서로 다른 사람의 경험과 시간이 함께 쌓입니다.
저에게 작업은 서로 다른 재료를 하나의 완벽한 형태로 만드는 일이 아닙니다. 각자가 가진 차이와 흔적을 지우지 않은 채 함께 존재할 수 있는 상태를 찾는 일에 가깝습니다. 단단함 안의 연약함, 상처 속의 회복, 차가움 속의 온기처럼 서로 반대되는 감정과 상태가 결국 우리 안에 함께 존재한다고 생각합니다.
저는 이러한 물질의 관계를 통해 쉽게 드러내지 못했던 내면의 모습을 바라보고자 합니다. 그리고 제 손에서 시작된 이야기가 관객의 기억과 경험을 만나 각자의 방식으로 또 다른 의미로 이어지기를 바랍니다.

I work in the metalworking alleys of Mullae-dong, where I explore materials with contrasting physical qualities, including steel, glass, mother-of-pearl, thread, and light. I am interested in how contrasting qualities such as strength and fragility, weight and lightness, and the artificial and the natural can reveal the complexity of inner emotions and human relationships.
The metalworking district of Mullae-dong is more than simply a backdrop to my practice. Surrounded by the sounds of cutting and welding, traces of metal dust and rust, and the accumulated presence of skill and labor, I encounter cold, solid steel every day. Cutting, heating, and joining steel while searching for a balance between line and plane is a process that rarely unfolds exactly as planned. Accepting the resistance of the material and repeatedly readjusting my approach resembles the way we endure and come to understand a life that does not always go as intended. Through this process, rather than concealing wounds or moments of instability, I transform them into form and discover the possibility of comfort and healing.
In my work, steel conveys strength and tension, while glass and mother-of-pearl reveal delicacy and instability as they change in response to light. Fine threads and illumination connect one material to another, as well as the work to the surrounding space. I am drawn to the moments when different materials collide, lean on one another, and arrive at a new balance. Within these encounters, intention and chance, control and unpredictability operate simultaneously, revealing emotional layers hidden beneath the surface.
Collaboration with the craftspeople and small-scale manufacturers of Mullae-dong is also an important part of my practice. Their skills and experience, accumulated through years of hands-on work, extend beyond the practical process of fabrication. Weld marks, cut edges, and distortions in metal remain as traces of the hand and become part of the visual language of the work. At the same time, my own intentions are continually revised and expanded through dialogue with their techniques. In this process, a work becomes not the result of a single hand, but a relationship in which different experiences and layers of time overlap.
For me, making art is not about integrating different materials into a single, perfected form. Rather, it is closer to creating a condition in which each material can coexist without erasing its differences or traces. Through fragility within strength, recovery within wounds, and balance emerging from tension, I seek to reflect on aspects of our inner selves that are often difficult to reveal.
I hope that the stories of material and relationship that begin in my hands will encounter the memories and experiences of viewers and continue to unfold in their own ways.
