문래동의 거친 철공소 골목은 저에게 단순한 작업실을 넘어 삶의 숨결이 머무는 소중한 공간입니다. 저는 매일 그곳에서 차갑고 단단한 철을 마주하며, 상상을 현실로 확장하는 작업에 몰두합니다. 철을 녹이고 붙이며 선과 면의 균형을 맞춰 나가는 그 시간들은, 뜻대로 흘러가지 않아 때로는 애틋하고 또 때로는 치열한 저의 삶과 닮아 있습니다. 그 안에서 의도와 우연이 자연스레 스며들어 만들어진 형태들은 저에게 언제나 고요하고 깊은 위로가 되어 줍니다.
빛을 품은 조명, 가늘게 이어진 실, 그리고 찬란하게 빛나는 유리와 자개까지. 저마다 다른 이야기를 가진 재료들이 서로 조화롭게 어우러지는 순간을 저는 소중히 여깁니다. 이들이 만들어내는 미묘한 울림은 표면 너머 우리가 숨기고 있는 복잡한 감정과 관계의 깊은 영역을 조용히 비추어 주는 창과 같습니다.
특히 저는 문래동 소공인분들과 머리를 맞대며 협업을 완성해가는 과정을 매우 뜻깊게 생각합니다. 서로 다른 기술과 삶의 경험이 예술 안에서 자연스럽게 어우러지는 그 순간들은, 제게 예술이 사람과 사람을 깊이 연결하는 힘임을 일깨워 줍니다.
마치 물질들이 저마다의 결을 내어주어 하나의 아름다운 이야기를 완성하듯, 제 손끝에서 피어난 이야기가 관객 여러분의 마음 깊은 곳에도 닿기를 바랍니다.
Hanju Lee _ Installation artist
I am Hanju Lee, an installation artist based in Mullae-dong, Seoul, where metalworking shops densely line the narrow alleyways. Working with materials such as steel, glass, and mother-of-pearl, I explore their physical qualities and the meanings that emerge through their transformation.
For me, the rough industrial landscape of Mullae-dong is more than simply the location of my studio; it is a deeply meaningful place where traces of everyday life and human presence remain. Each day, surrounded by cold and solid steel, I immerse myself in the process of turning imagination into physical form. Melting, welding, and joining steel while searching for a balance between line and plane, I often find that the process mirrors life itself—sometimes tender, sometimes intense, and rarely unfolding exactly as intended. The forms that emerge through this interaction between intention and chance have continually offered me a quiet and profound sense of comfort.
I also work with light, delicately connected threads, luminous glass, and iridescent mother-of-pearl. Each material carries its own character and story, and I value the moments when these distinct elements come together in unexpected harmony. The subtle resonance created through their encounters becomes, for me, a kind of window—one that quietly illuminates the complex emotions and relationships we often conceal beneath the surface.
Collaboration with the skilled craftspeople and small-scale manufacturers of Mullae-dong is also an essential part of my practice. I find great meaning in the process of exchanging ideas and developing works together. When different techniques, knowledge, and lived experiences naturally converge within a work of art, I am reminded of art’s ability to connect one person deeply with another.
Just as different materials reveal their individual textures and qualities to form a single, cohesive story, I hope the stories shaped through my hands may reach something deep within those who encounter my work.
